What is Engine Lifespan? How to Determine It?
Let's start with the fact that lifespan is an unknown variable. No one can ever say exactly how many kilometers a particular car can drive without repair – everything is relatively unpredictable.
Most people think that lifespan primarily depends on maintenance, but that's not entirely true.
Maintenance — Not the Main Factor?
Dealers provide warranty for 100,000 km on condition of following their strict service schedule, and what, there are no warranty claims? Of course there are, despite the fact that the manufacturer doesn't need this and they tried to calculate the service life as precisely as possible (so that after 100k the car would turn into a pumpkin and you'd have to go buy a new one), repairs still happen.
So maintenance comes second at best, not first.
What's the Main Factor for Lifespan?
Design features, presence/absence of factory defects, build quality, materials, etc. If the engine is made of foil, you can change oil every day, it will still fall apart.
On N20, even for those who really take care of their car, the timing chain can fail before 100k km. I think this is abnormal and attribute it to factory defects, so when buying such a car, don't dream that you'll maintain it properly and won't need chain replacement (there's a chance, but you won't know in advance).
In short, design features come first – they can fail at any time under any conditions.
What About a Reliable Car?
Now let's say we take a very reliable car, for example, 530d, change oil every 7k km (twice as often as scheduled), always clean intake and radiators, good fuel, etc., but:
- Full throttle when cold
- Drifting on dry asphalt
- "Punishing" everyone at traffic lights with two-pedal driving
What will the lifespan be? How long will such a car last?
Despite all its reliability, not very long.
Conclusion
It turns out that one without the other makes no sense:
- Even a very reliable engine can be "killed" very quickly
- A very unreliable one will run fine with proper care
How Does Tuning Affect Lifespan?
In general, there are too many "buts" here and we can't talk about exact numbers.
Proper Stage 1 tuning within factory safety margins with correct operation doesn't kill the engine faster. But if you rev the engine to redline when cold after chip tuning – problems are inevitable.
Everything depends on three factors:
- Design features and factory defects
- Maintenance quality
- Driving style
And tuning here is just an amplifier – it amplifies both reliability with the right approach and problems with improper operation.
